What it does

Comprehensive guide for working with HashiCorp Terraform Stacks. Use when creating, modifying, or validating Terraform Stack configurations (.tfcomponent.hcl, .tfdeploy.hcl files), working with stack components and deployments from local modules, public registry, or private registry sources, managing multi-region or multi-environment infrastructure, or troubleshooting Terraform Stacks syntax and structure.

Installed, it changes the agent in these ways.

What this skill changes about the agent is not written down here yet. The listing was collected from its source, and the description is in its own SKILL.md.

The skill itself

This is the whole product. A skill is instructions the model reads, so there is nothing behind the listing you cannot see first — the front matter loads with every session, and the body below it loads when the skill triggers.

9# Terraform Stacks
10
11Terraform Stacks simplify infrastructure provisioning and management at scale by providing a configuration layer above traditional Terraform modules. Stacks enable declarative orchestration of multiple components across environments, regions, and cloud accounts.
12
13## Core Concepts
14
15**Stack**: A complete unit of infrastructure composed of components and deployments that can be managed together.
16
17**Component**: An abstraction around a Terraform module that defines infrastructure pieces. Each component specifies a source module, inputs, and providers.
18
19**Deployment**: An instance of all components in a stack with specific input values. Use deployments for different environments (dev/staging/prod), regions, or cloud accounts.
20
21**Stack Language**: A separate HCL-based language (not regular Terraform HCL) with distinct blocks and file extensions.
22
23## File Structure
24
25Terraform Stacks use specific file extensions:
26
27- **Component configuration**: .tfcomponent.hcl

Why you can read it

Nothing in a skill executes. The client loads the text and the model follows it, so a skill can be audited the way a runbook is — by reading it.

What it costs in context

Skills are not billed by the call. They are paid for in context: every token the instructions occupy is a token your code, your diff and your conversation cannot use. Here is what this one takes and when it takes it.

≈130
always loaded
The name and description, so the model knows the skill exists and when to reach for it.
19,895
on trigger
The instruction body and 3 supporting files, read only when the skill fires.
10.0%
of a 200k window
Ten skills this size would take about 100% of the window before you open a file.
050k100k150k200k context window

20k tokens, estimated from the bundle at four bytes to the token, held for the rest of the session once it triggers. Heavy. Teams tend to install this one per project rather than globally, and load it only when the job comes up.

Servers bill, skills cost

A server charges by the month. A skill charges once per session, in context, and then keeps charging it for as long as the session lives.

Before and after

The same question, put to the same model twice: once as it comes, and once with these instructions loaded.

No worked example has been published for this skill yet.

The procedure it runs

The procedure has not been published here. It is in the skill’s own SKILL.md, which its author has not sent to the marketplace yet.

Prose, not code

These steps are written for a model to follow, not executed by a runtime. It can still be told to skip one, and it will say so when it does.

Servers it uses

None. This skill calls no MCP servers at all.

Everything it needs is in the instructions, so it works in a project with nothing connected — the model reads the file and changes how it works with what it can already reach.

It writes no files and reaches no network. All it changes is how the model reasons and writes.

What it asks for
Writes filesno
Network accessno

Read from the allowed-tools line of this skill’s own SKILL.md. A skill grants no permissions of its own — it can only ask for tools your client already has.

What it will not do

Every skill is narrow, and the useful ones say where they stop. These are the jobs this one is the wrong tool for.

What this skill is not for has not been published here. Nothing is implied by that: it is a section the author has not filled in.

What is in the bundle

4 files, 80.1 kB on disk. A bundle is text throughout: the instructions the model reads, plus the templates it fills in.

  • references/component-blocks.md13.0 kB
  • references/deployment-blocks.md21.9 kB
  • references/examples.md30.8 kB
  • SKILL.md14.4 kB
What is not in it

No dependencies and nothing executable: a skill is text the agent reads, so the bundle is 4 files you can review in full before installing. The GPL-3.0 licence covers the templates and examples as well as the instructions.

Install

Installing copies the bundle into your project. Nothing runs at install time — the files sit on disk until the model reads them.

# Terraform Stacks · 20k tokens when loaded mkdir -p .claude/skills && curl -fsSL https://mcprush.com/api/skills/terraform-stacks/bundle.tar.gz | tar -xz -C .claude/skills

Writes to .claude/skills/terraform-stacks/ in the current project. For every project instead, point the same command at your home folder — end it with -C ~/.claude/skills/ — or install it with npx mcprush@latest skill add terraform-stacks --global, which is the command that flag belongs to.

Which clients pick it up on their own

A skill is a folder of text. Most of these read a skills folder and pick it up without being told; the rest take the same folder another way — an upload in the app, a parameter on an API call — and then choose it by its description just the same.

Versions

v0.0.1 is what is on the shelf; no release here carries a date. Instructions change more often than APIs do — a skill can be rewritten entirely without anything it depends on moving.

Pinning

Put hashicorp/terraform-stacks@0.0.1 in the install command to hold this exact version. Without the suffix you get whatever is current the day you install, and nothing moves under you afterwards.
